Today we are celebrating one of the most important and beloved holidays in Korea - Seollal (설날), which marks the first day of the lunisolar calendar. In 2023, this special day falls on the 22nd of January. During this time, Koreans return to their hometowns and visit their families, bow down to the elders (perform a "sebae") wishing them a happy new year; they share traditional dishes with each other, play games together, pay respect to their ancestors, and they traditionally wear beautiful national costumes called hanboks.

Wonderful New Year traditions of Korea continue to inspire our artists, and the hanboks we've prepared for you today are a mixture of white and purple soft colors which symbolize purity and wisdom. The new outfits are made of the finest expensive silk and are richly decorated with embroidery which depicts a flying crane and charming lotus flowers, the symbols of long life and virtue.

The female hanbok, decorated with lotus flowers and a lovely norigae, is complemented by a silver hairpin adorned with lotus flowers and gemstones. This is a traditional female hair accessory called dwikkoji.

The male hanbok, which consists of dapho robe, jeogori blouse and baji trousers, is adorned with silk tassels and a silk braided belt, while the festive headband with silver patterns resembles manggeon, a headpiece which was worn to maintain the hairstyle.
